MTA launches Google Maps feature on LIRR train capacity and freezes fares for 2021
Long Island Rail Road now has real-time information on seat availability on Google Maps, LIRR President Phil Eng said on Wednesday.
The LIRR is one of the first two transport agencies in the world to offer train capacity updates on the widely used navigation app, with one South Wales transport entity being the other in the Google’s pilot program, officials with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority said in a press release.
“The LIRR not only examines best practices in the industry, but develops our own,” said Eng. “Thanks to our work with Google, more customers will be able to know as much information as possible about their journey. We want to make it as easy as possible for passengers to make safe decisions when they return to the railroad. I would like to thank the staff at LIRR for their hard work on this cutting edge technology which will now be used in several applications. ”
LIRR customers can now use both the LIRR Train Time app and Google Maps to see which train cars have seats available. The real-time seat tracking feature was developed by LIRR employees and uses either infrared sensors or a weight measurement to update the system, depending on the type of wagon.
The MTA also announced Wednesday that it will not increase passenger fares in 2021 thanks to a new federal aid package. However, the transit company still faces a potential deficit of $ 605 million in four years.
“The expected federal $ 10.5 billion gives us a bridge to the future, which now allows us to see how ridership further recovers and avoids some of the drastic savings measures we outlined in the February plan, ”said Robert Foran, CFO of MTA. officer. “With tariff box revenues trending towards the mid-scenario and toll revenues towards the best-case scenario, the main challenge ahead will be to close the remaining structural deficits in 2025.”
