Google Maps to include Indigenous place names | Women love technology
With the announcement that Fraser Island in Queensland was going to be renamed K’gari, I wanted to update Google Maps. The local people of Butchulla celebrated the name change which rightly means paradise.
It’s great to see Australia Post added an extra line on packaging and envelopes for the indigenous place name.
The push is on to be able to add traditional place names to driver’s licenses, government records, signage and more. Indigenous peoples are an integral part of our country’s history. It is extremely important that we capture and continue to use the language and words of the First Nation before they are lost forever.
There are a few native maps that you can refer to. Please note that there are disagreements over some areas as the dividing lines have changed over time and may overlap. It is therefore important that we consult with our local indigenous people about these changes.
It would be great to see the AIATSIS map of Indigenous Australia hanging in the workplace.
What is a Google local guide for?
As a local guide and contributor for Google Maps, I am able to upload images and videos. I can add new places and suggest modifications to existing places (pending moderation).
Did you know that you can also report images for a number of reasons? You can help Google by reporting content that may violate its policy on user-contributed content. This includes offensive, hateful, or sexually explicit reasons, legal issues, privacy concerns, poor quality, rate a photo of the place, or the like.
Google Maps says “By helping other people you earn points for each contribution and you get closer to the next level”
It was difficult to explore my country with the strict restrictions on travel. Despite this, I’m halfway through level 8. Each level in Local Guide is getting harder and harder, so I’m not sure if I can move up to the next level this year.
You can earn badges for your photographs, reviews, shoots, and as a pioneer and fact-finder. Your Google account will display a list of the number of your contributions.
It would be great to see an extra line on Google Maps where Local Guides can add traditional place names. I wish I could read the traditional indigenous place names on Google Maps, Apple Maps, etc. worldwide.
