Moderate magnitude 4.2 earthquake strikes 59 km east of Kathmandu, Nepal around noon
Earthquake 4.2 of October 1, 12:54 p.m. (GMT + 5:45 a.m.)
A shallow 4.2 magnitude earthquake was reported around noon near Kathmandu, Bagmati province, Nepal.
According to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC), the earthquake struck on Friday, October 1, 2021 at 12:09 p.m. local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deep ones because they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter and depth of the quake could be revised in the coming hours or minutes, as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or when other agencies release their report.
Based on preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused significant damage, but was likely felt by many as a slight vibration in the epicenter area.
Weak tremors were felt in Kodari (1,600 inhabitants) located 28 km from the epicenter, Dhulikhel (16,300 inhabitants) at 38 km, Banepā (17,200 inhabitants) at 40 km and Panauti̇̄ (27,600 inhabitants) at 42 km.
