A second report was then published by the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC), which classified it as a magnitude 5.4 earthquake. A third agency, the French National Seismic Surveillance Network (RéNaSS), reported the same magnitude 5.2 earthquake.
Based on preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the epicenter area. It could have caused slight to moderate damage.
Moderate tremors probably occurred at Balkh (pop. 114,900) located 9 km from the epicenter.
At Mazar-i-Sharif (pop. 303,300) located 28 km from the epicenter, and Qarchī Gak (8,900 pop.) 32 km away, the earthquake should have been felt as a slight tremor.
Weak tremors could be felt in Khulm (64,900 inhabitants) located 80 km from the epicenter, Shibirghān (55,600 inhabitants) at 94 km, Tukzār (12,000 inhabitants) at 95 km, Sar-e Pul (52,100 inhabitants) 98 km and Aībak (47,800 inhabitants) at 121 km.
