Google Maps users frightened by perfect circle in mountains sparking theories of UFO landing
Google Maps users were frightened by a perfect circle that appeared in some desert mountains, triggering theories that it was a UFO landing site.
The image was uploaded to the r / Google Maps forum on Reddit, with the caption: “What’s that round thing?”
The image, taken from the Google Map satellite view, clearly shows a large circular bump in an otherwise harmless mountain range.
Following the coordinates in the screenshot, it looks like the bizarre circle is in Egypt.
Reddit users were quick to share their thoughts on what the baffling image could be.
“UFO landing site,” one person commented, with three other people agreeing and appreciating the suggestion.
“It gives a rich structure,” said another, referring to the Richat Structure rock formation in the Sahara Desert, an eroded dome created by rings of sedimentary rock.
A third person joked, “The rectum of the Earth.”
Fortunately, a fourth person was on hand to solve the mystery. Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear that aliens have actually landed on Earth.
They said it was the “Wadi Dib Ring Complex in the Eastern Desert of Egypt,” a circular geological structure that formed as a result of swelling of magma.
Magma from the Wadi Dib ring complex solidified when it reached the Earth’s surface, forming several different types of rocks that all have different colors.

The rocks of different colors then came together to form a circle 2 km wide.
However, there is still some hope for those who wish the circle was linked to alien landings as it is visible from space.
There are actually a total of 15 similar circular rock structures located in the Eastern Desert of Egypt along the Gulf of Suez and Red Sea coast.
These alkaline ring complexes have all been identified over the past two decades, and there are even more of them on the east coast of Africa.
