There are millions of images on Google Maps. But some of them seem downright bizarre and their origin cannot be easily explained.

Among Google’s millions of images are weird, incredible and downright terrifying photos.

Google assembles billions of satellite and aerial images to create the observational data for Google Earth.

Google Maps – partly created by Australian software engineer Noel Gordon, brings together a plethora of technologies, including Street View images collected by vehicles.

We scoured the images to find some of the coolest and weirdest Google images.

Mysterious “pyramids”

This Google Earth image shows an image some have suggested could be an unexcavated pyramid in Egypt.

There is an ongoing debate as to whether this is a natural or man-made structure.

“Breath of the desert”

The Desert Breath is a work of art created in the Egyptian desert by a team of Greek artists.

The spiral looks amazing from space.

Kazakhstan Pentagram

This mysterious pentagram is located in a remote part of Kazakhstan.

For years it has been linked with occult movements.

However, the pentagram is now believed to be the outline of a star-shaped park.

The ‘boneyard’

This image shows where the planes are going to die. The “boneyard” aircraft is located in Tucson, Arizona.

It is the largest aircraft cemetery in the world.

Vulcan’s throne

This image shows a strange assemblage of peas near the ash-cone volcano in Arizona known as the Vulcan Throne.

It is believed that the motive could be due to the movements of red harvester ants.

Gobi Desert

Deep in the Gobi Desert in China is a strange set of seemingly random zigzagging white lines.

Most likely, this is an array of Yagi antennas, which is used for weather tracking and atmospheric research.

Sudanese “lips”

Located on a hilltop formation in Gharb, Darfur, Sudan is what looks like full lips.

It could be simply formed by the contrast between different colors of sand.

“The ghost island”

This mysterious “ghost island” off the Australian coast lives like a ghost on Google Maps.

Historically, the island was believed to be 24 kilometers long and five kilometers wide – hard to miss, roughly speaking.

But you won’t find it in Google Maps today. Instead, you’ll see a slight outline of what looks like a long, thin island – but with no landmass in sight.

Blood red lake

A lake just outside of Sadr City in Iraq has inexplicably turned blood red.

There has been continued speculation as to the cause of the mysterious phenomenon, but so far there has been no official explanation.

Canadian “face”

In the Canadian badlands, there is a geographic feature that looks a lot like a face.

The picture shows that the feature appears to have a nose, chin, and lips.

Giant of Atacama

In the Atacama Desert, Chile, an anthropomorphic figure is carved into the ground.

The geoglyph is 119 m long and is dated between 900 and 1450 AD.

Romanian ‘UFO’

In a heavily forested area of Romania there is a saucer-shaped object which at first glance appears to be a “UFO”.

But on closer inspection, it’s actually a really cool water tower.

Symbol of Kazakhstan

This geoglyph is one of many in Kazakhstan, the oldest of which is believed to be around 2,800 years old.

They are believed to have been built during the early Iron Age of Kazakhstan.

Azraq Oasis wheels

The Wheels of Azraq Oasis are items that stretch from Syria to Saudi Arabia.

They are believed to date from 2000 years ago and are built of stone.

Island in a lake on an island in a lake on an island

Lake Taal is a freshwater caldera lake in the Philippines.

It is located on Luzon Island, on Volcano Island, which has Crater Lake, which contains its own small island called Vulcan Point.

“Extraterrestrial structures”

This mixture of objects has been described as “alien structures” and certainly looks strange as seen on Google Maps. But there is a trivial explanation.

It is actually an oil field in Rio Negro, Argentina.

Scary scarecrows

This image shows 1000 scarecrows in a field in Finland.

The work is called “The Silent People” and was created by artist Reijo Kela.
