Top 8 Ways to Fix Google Maps Not Working on iPhone
Google Maps is above its competitors when it comes to navigation. Considering the number of features, it’s no surprise why many iPhone users prefer Google Maps over Apple Maps. But like any other app, Google Maps can also bug you sometimes and stop working on your iPhone.
Having trouble with Google Maps is probably the last thing you want on the road. To help you out, we’ve compiled a list of troubleshooting tips that should help you resolve recurring issues with Google Maps. So let’s go.
1. Check internet connection
Since Google Maps requires a stable and continuous internet connection to work, your first action should be to check the internet connection on your iPhone. To test the power of the Internet, try performing a quick speed test.
Along with checking the internet connection, you also need to make sure that Google Maps can use mobile data on your iPhone. To do this, open the Settings app and go to Mobile data. Scroll down and turn on the switch next to Google Maps.
2. Restart your iPhone
If the internet seems fine, you can try restarting your iPhone. Sometimes minor glitches or background processes can prevent an app from working properly. Luckily, these issues are often easily resolved once you restart your iPhone.
Open the Settings app and go to General to turn off your iPhone. Tap Shut Down and use the slider to turn off your iPhone.
Wait a minute, then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button to turn on your iPhone.
3. Enable Location Services
Next, you need to check the Location settings on your iPhone to make sure Location Services is turned on. Google Maps will fail to detect your location and guide you if it is not enabled.
To enable location services on iPhone, here is what you need to do:
Step 1: Open the Settings app and go to Privacy.
2nd step: Go to location services and turn on the switch next to it.
Restart the Google Maps app to see if it works properly.
4. Check permission settings
Lack of permissions is another reason why Google Maps may not work as expected. Thus, you need to check if Google Maps is allowed to access the location by following the steps below.
Step 1: Head over to the Settings app, navigate to Privacy, and tap Location Services.
2nd step: Scroll down to find Google Maps.
Step 3: Select When using the app or Always from the list. Then turn on the switch next to Precise location.
5. Enable Background App Refresh
Background App Refresh is an iPhone feature that allows apps and services on your iPhone even when they are not in use. So, if you are not getting regular alerts from the Google Maps app regarding traffic, route options, etc., it could be because the app is not allowed to run in the background- plan.
Step 1: Launch the Settings app and go to General.
2nd step: Go to Background App Refresh and turn on the switch next to Google Maps.
6. Reset your device location settings
If the problem persists even after granting all necessary permissions, you can try resetting location settings on your iPhone. This will revoke all previous location permissions for apps and services on your iPhone and help you start over.
Step 1: Open the Settings app and go to General.
2nd step: Tap Transfer or Reset iPhone.
Step 3: Tap the Reset option at the bottom and select Reset Location & Privacy from the menu that appears.
Enter your lock screen passcode and select Reset location and privacy again when prompted. Once done, open Google Maps and allow all location permissions again to see if it works properly.
7. Update Google Maps
App updates are crucial as they usually bring all sorts of improvements, features, and bug fixes. So, if you don’t tend to update the apps on your phone regularly, then they might not work as expected. To avoid this, you can try updating the Google Maps app by going to the App Store.
8. Reinstall Google Maps
If nothing works, you will need to uninstall and reinstall the app as a last resort. This will delete all data related to the app and eventually fix the problem.
