How to Download Google Maps Directions to Use Offline

Google Maps is great when you need to find directions for your trip, but there may be times when you want to download Google Maps directions to use offline.
If you’re heading to an area with weak or poor cell service, you may want to download your Google Maps directions for offline use.
Google has integrated this feature into its Google Maps app, which can be handy if you’re planning a long trip and want to make sure you have directions for the entire journey.
I normally do this when I go to a new place because you might not know what the cellular connections are like in that area. This feature is available in Google Maps for Android and for iPhone, you can see how to do it on each device below.
How to Download Offline Google Maps Directions for Android?
To download your route to your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Maps app on your device. You will need to be connected to the internet and signed in to Google Maps.
Now search for where you are going, for exampleLondonat the bottom select the name and address then select To downloadyou can then download the maps of this area.
If you searched for a more specific place in this city, for example, Regent Streetthen select Following then Download offline map > To download.
This will then allow you to get directions for that area when you’re offline, things like traffic and alternate routes don’t work when you’re offline on Google Maps.
How to download directions from Google Maps for iPhone or iPad?
To download offline maps for your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Maps on your device, then select the location, i.e. London, at the bottom, select the name or address of the location, then select Following > Download offline map> To download.
You will then be able to use the maps when you are offline for that area, it will work with driving directions but you won’t get any traffic information, alternative routes etc.
This is a great feature for Google Maps that has worked well for me in the past, especially when going on holiday in the UK to rural areas with poor cellular coverage.
