Businesses lose Google Maps and local reviews again
There seems to be another set of missing or deleted reviews by Google in Google Maps and local listings. Joy Hawkins noticed an increase in corporate complaints over the past week, but Mike Blumenthal thinks this has been more intentional in recent months.
As a reminder, we notice this starting again in March 2022, when reviews were removed from Google’s local listings. This also happened in 2019 and 2021.
Mike said he’s seen an increase in business complaints on forums about reviews being removed or missing – he shared this chart – because charts make it easier to understand. He said he noticed the uptick actually started in February with those complaints.
Joy said on Twitter “I hear tons of reports of businesses losing reviews over the past week that were posted before but then recently deleted.” There have been a number of complaints in local search forums recently, here they are:
In short, my client tells me that more than 10 people have gone missing since February 2022. After a while he started asking his clients to send screenshots because they were telling them they leaving reviews but not showing up. I have proof of 3 but the client insists it is much more.
It seems they tend to filter out “new” reviewers and “1 and done” reviewers. Similar to Yelp. Maybe if these people continue to leave reviews elsewhere and grow their profile, they might not get filtered out?
I know that when I see “1 review” on a profile, I question it as legit, so maybe it’s part of Google’s filter?
It’s not 100%, but a high percentage.
Joy added in the forums:
Not only has the filter gotten stricter, but they’ve also been doing waves of takedowns lately, so I’m hearing tons of reports of businesses losing reviews over the past week that were posted before but have then recently deleted.
Instead of sending customers a link to review you, tell them to Google you and leave a review. This *might* help – worth testing.
I will now escalate your thread to the Google forum.
