Acceleration Robotics announces and opens ROBOTCORE®, the first robotic processing unit – specializing in ROS calculations
Acceleration Robotics, a robotic semiconductor startup based in the Basque Country, Spain, announced ROBOTCORE®,a robot-specific processing unit for the robot architect. This Robotic Processing Unit specializes in speed up the robot operating system (ROS) calculations and features 16xCPU, one GPU and one FPGA give robots the ability to react faster, consume less energyand deliver real-time additional capabilities. ROBOTCORE® design files have been leaked and made freely available to the ROS 2 Hardware Acceleration Working Group.
Robotic processing units (RPUs) are robot brains, robot processing units that efficiently map robot behaviors (programmed as ROS computational graphics) to underlying computational resources. ROBOTCORE® comprises multiple CPUs, a GPU, and an FPGA interconnected in a common Ethernet data bus that allows the traditional control-driven approach used in robotics to be combined with a data-driven approach. When architected appropriately, via acceleration cores (or robot cores), ROBOTCORE® provides robotic architects with ROS 2 accelerated libraries that offer faster calculations (do tasks quickly once started), additional determinism (the task takes place in exactly the same amount of time, each time) and real time (respecting the deadlines set for each task).
